Embryo Donation

Embryo Donation in Miami and South Florida

The process of in vitro fertilization (IVF) may result in numerous viable embryos. These embryos are cryopreserved (frozen) and are available to the patient for future attempts at pregnancy. Sometimes a woman or couple may not need or use these excess embryos and decide to donate those embryos to other couples who have not been able to successfully develop their own embryos.

Embryo Donation at IVFMD

As part of IVFMD’s screening procedure, the male and female who donated the embryo(s) are thoroughly screened for infectious diseases and undergo genetic carrier screening. The woman or couple wanting to use the donated embryo(s) undergoes appropriate pre-pregnancy screening as well. Once all parties are cleared, hormone medication is used to prepare the intended mother’s uterus to make it as receptive as possible for the implantation of the embryo.

Embryo Donation FAQs

  • The IVF process may result in an excessive number of embryos. These embryos can be cryopreserved (frozen) and saved for future use. Sometimes, an individual or couple may not need or use these additional embryos and decide to donate them to other aspiring parents who have been unable to successfully develop their own embryos.

  • Eggs and sperm require fertilization. For example, if you’re a female using an egg donor, you’ll still need sperm from a partner or another donor to fertilize the egg and create an embryo. In this scenario, your partner can have a genetic link to the child. An embryo has already been fertilized and is ready for implantation. Therefore, neither intended parent will have a genetic link to the child.
