Fertility Preservation & Oncofertility

Oncofertility: Safeguarding Hope for the Future

Cancer is a challenging diagnosis, particularly if you want to become a parent. When a cancer patient is about to start treatment, fertility preservation is not usually a primary concern, but a chemotherapy or radiation regimen can damage sperm and eggs to varying degrees, possibly affecting future fertility.

After cancer treatment, one marker of decreased fertility for some women is the loss of menstrual cycles or premature menopause. Others may have “diminished ovarian reserve,” which means the ovaries were damaged by treatment, but some ovarian functions remain. Patients with “diminished ovarian reserve” may have difficulty conceiving, whether on their own or with Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). However, freezing eggs before undergoing cancer treatment can help increase your chances of having viable eggs available after treatment.

For men, either the cancer itself or the cancer treatments may cause infertility. Specific cancers that can damage the testis include testicular cancer and Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In either case, freezing sperm can help keep your family-building options open.

Oncofertility FAQs

  • Oncofertility is a field of medicine that combines oncology and reproductive endocrinology to help patients with a cancer diagnosis preserve their fertility before treatments like chemotherapy and radiation.

  • In women, cancer treatment can cause ovarian damage or failure, early menopause, and other reproductive problems. In men, cancer treatment can cause damage to the testes, interfering with sperm production and testosterone secretion.

  • There are various fertility preservation options for cancer patients depending on their specific condition. Individuals can cryopreserve (freeze) their eggs or sperm for later use or freeze fertilized embryos for future implantation. Your fertility team will help create a custom treatment plan that best addresses your needs and family-building goals.

  • Due to the aggressive nature of cancer treatments, oncofertility involves a greater sense of urgency. At IVFMD, we provide short-notice, high-priority appointments. We’ve also partnered with LIVESTRONG Fertility to provide additional education, support, and financial assistance.
