Saline Infusion Sonogram / Sonohysterogram: Testing for Uterine Abnormalities

Various tests are performed at IVFMD to determine the cause of patients’ fertility issues. An important test we carry out is the Saline Infusion Sonogram or SIS. Another name for this test is Sonohysterogram or SHG.

The main purpose of this imaging study is to determine if abnormalities of the uterine cavity might exist, which can interfere with attempts to get pregnant. For example, some women are born with an abnormal configuration of the uterus, while other women can develop myomas (fibroids) or polyps within their uterus. The SIS/SHG would uncover these abnormalities and allow our fertility experts to assess the potential need for treating these conditions.

During the procedure, a sterile, thin tube called a catheter is inserted into the cervix (opening to the uterus, through the vagina). A sterile liquid (called saline) is instilled into the uterine cavity while a transvaginal ultrasound examination is done to view the manner in which the liquid fills the inside of the uterus, exposing abnormalities like polyps, myomas, or developmental anomalies. On occasion, depending upon your individual situation, your doctor may also instill the solution in such a way as to assess the patency of your fallopian tubes.

SIS/SHG FAQs

  • The SIS/SHG procedure causes uterine cramps, so your reproductive expert team will recommend you take medication prior to your appointment in order to minimize your discomfort.

  • Depending upon the patient’s individual situation, your doctor or nurse may prescribe a short course of antibiotics to be taken around the time of the test to decrease your odds of infection.

  • No special preparation is required before the procedure. You may take an over-the-counter medication shortly beforehand to minimize any potential discomfort.

  • The entire procedure usually takes approximately 30 minutes.
