Montenegro is an associate member of the American Society for Nutrition, and a member of The American Society for Reproductive Medicine, the National Strength & Conditioning Association, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Society of Exercise Physiology. She also serves as a spokesperson for the American Heart Association, Florida regional chapter, in the area of cardiac rehabilitation, and in 2011 was named Woman of the Year in the Sports & Athletics category for Miami-Dade County’s In the Company of Women Awards.
Since 2008, Montenegro has held the position of adjunct professor in Sciences at Florida International University, where she created two courses that combined both exercise rehabilitation and metabolic conditions for special populations.
As a Specialist in Fitness Nutrition (SFN), Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), Montenegro founded and operated a successful private health-wellness center in her home country of Venezuela. The center focused on preventive health services with a focus on women’s health, pregnancy, and wellness, and included nutritional guidelines, supplementation, exercise activity, and overall health services.
Her expertise in these areas has led Montenegro to be a sought-after spokesperson and expert for national organizations and media outlets to speak about issues related to fertility, menopause, weight management, supplementation, exercise, and health related nutrition.
She is the founder of “Simply Healthy,” the online magazine found at MartaMontenegro.com, which advocates science-based advice and insight in the areas of health and wellness, supplementation, fertility, weight management, physical activity, and cardiac rehabilitation. Healthline.com named it one of the top three Best Health Blogs of 2011 and 2012 among more than 100 submissions.
Montenegro is a frequent contributor to both local and national media, including CNN, CNN en Español, NBC, ABC, CBS, and Univision. Her stories on the latest in nutrition, fitness, exercise science, and supplementation have appeared in national consumer magazines and websites, such as AOL en Español and Fox News Latino. She is the author of the popular Spanish-language book, “Olvidese de la Dieta: Ejercitese y Aprenda a comer” (“Forget Dieting! Exercise and Learn How to Eat”).
She earned a Masters in Science and Physiology with a specialization in cardiac rehabilitation, magna cum laude, from Florida International University, and a Masters in Finance, magna cum laude, from Instituto de Estudios Superiores en Administracion (IESA) in Venezuela.
Montenegro has lived an active lifestyle since she was 18, from endurance running to weight lifting to ballroom dancing. One of her favorite hobbies is experimenting in the kitchen to create new and exciting healthy dishes. She also is active with the charity Hermanas Dominicas de la Presentacion.
