| The last decade has seen tremendous
advances in the field of minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery
in gynecology. As a result of new instrumentation and technology available
to the advanced gynecologic laparoscopist, hysterectomies and other
major surgeries can often be avoided without compromising the quality
of treatment.
Physicians here at SFIRM have contributed to the advancement of
operative gynecology as well as micro surgical laparoscopy and are
continuously involved with educating their colleagues around the
world in these techniques. Our teaching video produced by Ethicon
Endosurgical Division of Johnson and Johnson is being used both in
the United States, Europe and in Central and South America to help
other physicians to become familiar with this technique.
One of the many surgical advances pioneered by the physicians at
SFIRM utilizes micro-surgical techniques for the reversal of a tubal
ligation and is done in an outpatient setting via a laparoscope.
A laparoscope is a small telescope that is inserted into the abdomen
through a small incision and is used to look directly into the abdomen.
A laparoscopic procedure is usually performed in an outpatient setting
which helps to avoid an overnight stay in the hospital. The advantages
of a laparoscopy as compared to more invasive types of surgery include
a reduced hospital stay, smaller incisions and a much shorter recovery
period. The physicians at SFIRM are also able to offer outpatient
laparoscopic procedures for myomectomies, ovarian cystectomies, the
treatment of endometriosis, ovarian cortical ablations, presacral
neurectomies, tubal reanostomosis, as well as most other types of
tubal and pelvic reconstructive surgeries.
In the area of hysteroscopy, the physicians at SFIRM frequently
perform endometrial ablations, uterine fibroid resections as well
as reconstruction of uterine abnormalities such as the removal of
a septum, of adhesions and polyps and tubal recanalization procedures.
A hysteroscope is an instrument that is inserted into the uterus
through the vagina and cervix and allows the surgeon to visualize
and treat some abnormalities in the uterus. If a hysterectomy is
considered necessary, the physicians at SFIRM are usually able to
perform this procedure laparoscopically limiting hospitalization
to a 48-hour stay.
SFIRM is affiliated with the premier hospitals in the South Florida
medical community including Baptist Health Systems, Memorial Health
Systems and Doctors Hospital Health South. We are able to offer comprehensive
package arrangements to our patients who are not covered by health
care insurance and to our patients coming to SFIRM for medical care
from out of town. |
